Lowboy, John Wray
It is the story of a schizophrenic teenager that escapes from a mental institution. Lowboy is convinced that his aim is to save the world from global warming. He thinks he can achieve his goal by cooling down his own body through sexual intercourse. It is also the story of a mother and a detective in search of a missing schizophrenic.
I found interesting that the author proposed a view into the thinking machinery of his schizophrenic main character. It makes me wonder how much a non-schizophrenic may understand the way of thinking of a schizophrenic. How close to the reality one may be. The relation between the detective and the mother kept my curiosity alive throughout the book. The book raises the question of how would you, reader, react in the face of a schizophrenic? Would you just go by and ignore him? Would you try to establish contact with him? Would you support and help him? Finally, would you be able to diagnose a schizophrenic?
