Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert

Lectures

A short time after “Eat, Pray and Love”, I read this book, “Committed” by the same author. My first impression of the book was: “This is not at all what I expected. Do I want to read this?” At first, this book is not much about the author’s feelings concerning marriage. She exposes her research on the subject. I continued reading and found that the book was getting more interesting. The author interleaved her research with the tale of her situation and how she found she could be in peace with the idea of marriage. She finds this peace when she finds out that this institution is not imposed on us. It had to be fought for. Couples over generations have fought to be able to construct a space of their own. It has been instituted and embraced by authorities to regain some kind of control on an uncontrollable, private space, families.

I would not really recommend reading this book. I found some nice sayings, some great pieces of text as well as some boring ones.
